ABOUT SOCIAL WORKERS AND THE FAMILY SERVICE AGENCY

Social workers

are not all cut from the same cloth . You could get one who is very cordial and supportive . Someone who is well educated and informed  is also a plus.

If you get these combinations , you have a great social worker !

Another kind

of social worker claims that they are overworked , that they don't get any respect , insist you treat them as a superior(beware if they want you to address them with Mrs. or Mr. , but they call you by your first name) ,and are sadly lacking in information to pass on to you

This page will give women the tools to empower them to become their  own advocates.

To start  , here are some general resources  :

 DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

(Sometimes called Family and Children Services )

Cash assistance (AFDC or welfare), food stamps, WIC for moms with younger children (see below), medical assistance (Medicaid), medical programs for pregnant women and children, child support enforcement, child daycare subsidies/assistance , sometimes referrals if you get a good caseworker.

To qualify for programs you need to be income eligible and meet other guidelines such as available assets, cost of your housing, etc. This will require a meeting with a social worker.

MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY SERVICES

To find out what services you MAY be qualified for , Michigan has an online program that you can use . It does not require any information that they can use to find out who you are.
